Prof Winifred W. Kamau, Chair, Department of Private Law 

The Department of Private Law has a concentration of highly qualified academic staff whose expertise spans a wide range of areas.  There are currently twenty-one academic staff members, one secretary and one office assistant.  Prof. Winifred Kamau was appointed Chair of the Department in May 2014.

Of the academic staff, there are three Professors, namely Prof. Patricia Kameri-Mbote, formerly Dean of the School of Law, Prof. Francis D.P. Situma, Prof Albert Mumma who also serves as Associate Dean of the School of Law. The Associate Professors are Prof. Winifred Kamau (the current Chair of Department), and Prof. Edwin O. Abuya.

Senior Lecturers in the Department are Dr. Jacob Gakeri (currently on leave of absence), Dr. Kariuki Muigua and Dr. Robert Kibugi.

As part of staff development in the Department, we have a number of Tutorial Fellows who are pursuing their PhD as they receive mentorship in teaching and research.  These are: Faith Mony Odhiambo, Kennedy Ogutu, Mary Ongore, William Oluchina, Winny Mwende, Jimmy and Margaret Nguyo.

Several members of the Department have rendered distinguished service in the public sector. Prof. Patricia Kameri-Mbote is a Senior Counsel and an internationally renowned legal researcher and scholar.  She has been involved in national policy formulation processes including Land, Biotechnology and Wildlife and sits on a number of boards. She is the immediate former Chair of the Kenya School of Law Board. 

Prof. Situma has previously served with the National Environmental Management Service (NEMA) as Director of Legal Services.  Prof. Albert Mumma was a member of the National Environmental Tribunal (NET) while Prof. Kamau was Assistant Director (Continuing Professional Development, Projects & Research) at the Kenya School of Law.  Hon. Eric K.O. Ogola is on leave of absence serving as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya. 

Dr. Gakeri is Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Legal Education while Mr. Stephen Ouma is Deputy Director, Judiciary Training Institute. Dr. Muigua is currently serving as a member of the National Environmental Tribunal. Dr Kibugi is currently Chairing the Task Force Appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry to advice on Implementation of the African Court Decision concerning the Ogiek Community; and further to advice the Governing on reforms to be implemented in the governance and management of community forests.

The Department hosts the Research, Library and Publications Committee of the School, which is charged with the responsibility of publishing the East African Law Journal (relaunched in 2015) and facilitating the students’ publication of the University of Nairobi Law Journal.  The Department operates with the able assistance of the Secretary, Ms. Catherine Kamau.
